EMERCOM of Russia took part in the meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Disaster Risk Management

On April 16, a regular meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Disaster Risk Management was held at the BRICS Interstate Union chaired by the Republic of India. The Russian delegation at the meeting was represented by Oleg Manuylo, Director of the Civil Defence and Population Protection Department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.
Representatives of the national emergency services of Brazil, India, China and South Africa took part in the event by videoconference.
At the initiative of foreign partners, the meeting participants exchanged views on issues related to improving the emergency prevention and response system, the development of volunteerism, as well as the prospects for the development of infrastructure resilient to natural disasters.
“Global climatic changes, along with the rapid development of scientific and technological progress, entail an increase in the risks of natural and man-made emergencies. Emergency services need to be prepared to also calculate the risks of tomorrow in order to be able to withstand new threats. This requires the development and improvement of the emergency prevention and response system,” Oleg Manuylo noted.
He noted that at present the EMERCOM of Russia forms and implements a wide range of state tasks in the field of civil defense, ensuring industrial safety, protecting the population and territories, providing humanitarian assistance, promoting international development, as well as improving the systems for training specialists for emergency services and other important directions.
Also, from the Russian side, specialists from the National Center for Crisis Management, the All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense and Emergencies of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia, as well as the All-Russian Student Rescue Corps shared their experience in the field of prevention and elimination of emergencies.
Following the meeting, the Indian side signed a protocol of the meeting. The parties agreed to continue the dialogue with a view to strengthening national capabilities to combat disasters.
